A bright ruby colour in the glass with aromas of crunchy red cherry, sweet spice and subtle smoky notes. On the palate the flavours are well concentrated, with silky tannins and bright acidity giving the wine great structure and length.
After spending the winter building up their strength, the vines profited fully from a very warm spring, with budburst in early April ensuring a head start in terms of the growth cycle that was maintained right up until harvest. During the summer, a few spells of heatwave alternated with more mixed weather. However, ripening continued at a good pace and by the end of August, the first grapes were being picked, two weeks ahead of average. Harvesting continued until mid-September as each plot reached peak maturity. The grapes were in exceptional health and required virtually no sorting.
The grapes were harvested into small crates, then carefully sorted at the winery. The grapes were 100% destemmed but not crushed, and gravity-fed into stainless steel tanks. Fermentation took place using only indigenous yeasts and lasted for 21 days, with gentle pigeage to extract colour. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 35% new. It was lightly filtered before it was bottled in March 2019.
