In 1806 , William Colgate , a manufacturer of soap and candles, start a business of soap, candles and starch on Dutch Street in New York , the name of his company : " William Colgate & Company" . In 1833 , William Colgate has a serious heart attack which halts sales of the company. After a few years of rest , he resumed work . In the 1840s , the company began selling individual bars of soap at the same weight. In 1857 , William Colgate died and the company was renamed " Colgate & Company" under the direction of Samuel Colgate , his son, who did not wish to continue the work of his father, but he did, believing it was the right thing to do. In 1872 , Colgate has Cashmere Bouquet , their first molded scented soap . In 1873 , the company produced its first toothpaste, a fragrant paste sold in jars. The company is the first to sell toothpaste tube , Colgate Ribbon Dental Cream, in 1896. The same year , Colgate hired Martin Ittner and under his direction based one of the first laboratories appliquée3 research. In 1898, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the BJ Johnson Company manufactures soap entirely of palm and olive oil , the formula has been developed by BJ Johnson.
