Description:
WHAT I EAT: A beautiful tawny colour, a fine and grainy texture, and a subtle hint of liquorice...
This whole cane sugar, produced through the traditional expertise of Andean farmers, is a true regional product with a unique flavour. It retains all the natural nutritional qualities of cane sugar, being naturally rich in magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.
The distinctive taste of Piura panela comes from local sugar cane varieties, perfectly adapted to the conditions of the Andean foothills.
Entirely produced in Peru: We import this sugar directly from the cooperative, ensuring that as much added value as possible remains in the hands of producers. Once harvested, the cane is transformed into panela (whole cane sugar) using a natural and traditional dehydration process in small artisanal producer units. The packaging is also done in Peru, allowing the cooperative to manage the entire process. This fair-trade supply chain was created by ETHIQUABLE and CEPICAFE/NORANDINO in 2003. Over time, producers have taken charge of every stage of production locally, giving this fair-trade project a strong and lasting local impact.
WHAT I STAND FOR: A profound economic transformation.
Through fair trade, the cooperative has radically changed the rural economy of the Sierra de Piura in Peru. Producers have been able to improve their living conditions and invest in a better future. In less than ten years, whole cane sugar has become an economic driver in the Andean foothills of Piura. The success of this fair-trade sector and its impact on over 800 producers stems from the determination of the NORANDINO cooperative to improve living standards in this disadvantaged region.
Starting from a local sugar cane tradition, NORANDINO has diversified and increased the income of small farmers who initially grew coffee. With ETHIQUABLE’s long-term support, it has created new momentum in an area previously affected by rural depopulation.
The producers of Norandino welcome you to the Whole Cane Sugar Festival of November 2015 and invite you to discover the entire production process of your unrefined sugar.
